Thai Heritage Conservation Day è stata celebrata ogni anno dal 1985 sia per onorare la principessa Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, la seconda figlia del re Rama IX, nata il 2 aprile 1955, e per celebrare il contributo della famiglia reale alla creazione e alla conversazione del patrimonio nazionale . In questa occasione, molte attività culturali sono organizzate come seminari accademici, mostre, conferenze, concerti e spesso i biglietti d'ingresso dei musei nazionali e dei parchi storici tailandesi sono gratuiti

Loy significa "galleggiare" e un krathong è una coppa, ornata di fiori, fatta in genere con una foglia di banano. Questa festività non è prettamente buddhista ma si crede che i kratong galleggianti portino fortuna.Al sorgere della luna, durante la notte di plenilunio del dodicesimo mese lunare, solitamente in novembre, i krathong vengono depositati dolcemente sull'acqua dei fiumi, dei canali, dei laghi e degli stagni, con piccole candele e bastoncini di incenso accesi, che nel buio della notte creano una meravigliosa e delicata scenografia.Il loro mitologico compito è quello di scacciare la malasorte e prospettare un felice futuro. Si ritiene che le coppie che depositano assieme un Krathong vivranno lungamente felici.Solitamente nei Krathong viene anche depositata una monetina per aumentarne i buoni auspici, e solitamente gruppetti di bambini ne approfittano tuffandosi per recuperarle.Ad aumentare maggiormente la spettacolarità della festa, in questa notte vengono fatte volare anche innumerevoli lanterne di carta contenenti una fiammella accesa che si innalzano nel cielo fino a confondersi con il luccichio delle stelle

At moonrise, during the moonlit night of the twelfth lunar month, usually in November, the krathong are deposited gently on the water of the rivers, canals, lakes and ponds, with small candles and lighted incense sticks, which create a marvelous and delicate setting in the darkness of the night.Their mythological task is to drive away bad luck and envision a happy future. It is believed that the couples who deposit together a Krathong will live long happily. Usually in the Krathong is also deposited a coin to increase the good wishes, and usually small groups of children take advantage of diving to recover them.
